Originally erected in 1784 by Robert Baillie as a memorial to his wife, with the death of his daughter Lesley and the addition of her name it came to be known as the Bonnie Lesley Baillie Memorial after Robert Burns called her “The most beautiful, elegant woman in the world”.
Having fallen into some serious disrepair and having been painted with several coats of paint Conservation Masonry were tasked with bringing it back to some extent to its former glory in early 2017. By using the DOFF steam system and softener the paint was removed, the monument was dismantled and subsequently re-erected with a new base course in stone that best matched the original. Further works are envisaged to be undertaken in time to repair further upper portions and to revitalise and paint the lettering.
